The Department of Social Medicine & Health Education, originally a division of social medicine, was revamped into a full-fledged faculty in November, 2008. The department has a group of young and middle-aged scholars who have been engaged in social medicine and health education, teaching and scientific research for a long time. Currently, we have nine members working in, including one professor, four associate professor, and four lecturers. Among them eight have PhD degree and one are PhD candidates.

Pedagogically, we offer a list of the courses, like Social Medicine, Health Education, Community Medicine, Community-based Survey, to all the registered students: undergraduates, 7-year program students, adult learners, oversea students and MPHers.  

Within our academic interests are social health conditions evaluation and health assessment, community health services research, health management strategies research for chronic diseases, health policies research, hospital management, health education and promotion research, with our major concern on the health policies research program and developing the science of implementation. Faculty members have undertaken or completed various scientific research projects such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Natural Science Foundation of Jiangsu Province, the Natural Science Foundation of Jiangsu Province Education Department, philosophy and Social Science Foundation, and the American Chinese Medical Foundation (CMB). The research field involves the evaluation of population health status, the intervention of social factors affecting population health, community health service research, chronic disease health management strategy research, health policy analysis, hospital management, health education research and practice and so on. In recent years, we have carried out extensive and in-depth cooperation and exchanges with domestic and foreign scientific research institutes.

The department is committed to the realization of the social service and cultural inheritance function of this major. Based on the construction of the network platform of Public Health Emergency consultation Service and Research Center of Nanjing Medical University, the department provides information consultation and health education services. By participating in the construction of healthy Jiangsu Institute of Construction and Development and Health Policy Research Center of Nanjing Medical University, the department provides think-tank services for health policy development of governments at all levels.
