steve: you haven't moved from your desk for about five hours mike.

mike: tell me about it! i have two submissions due by 4pm today and i am way behind.

steve: i know that the reports are vital, but so is your health.

mike: my health is fine - i haven't had the flu at all this year.

steve: but what about your eyes and hands?

mike: they feel fine. why are you asking about my eyes and hands?

steve: the hr department says that we should take a break for five minutes every hour to rest our eyes from staring at the computer and our hands from typing.

mike: really? i didn't know that.

steve: listen up and i will lecture you about oh&s.

new words (生詞)

1) occupational health and safety: usually known as oh&s, it covers everything to do with the safety and health of staff

my company pays a lot of attention to the oh&s laws so that all staff are safe.

2) submissions: formal reports

submissions are very important because they are often used by senior management to make key decisions.

3) vital: very important

coffee is vital to me in the morning - i cannot function without it!

4) flu: short for influenza

i hate it when i catch the flu because my nose is running and my throat gets very sore.

before occupational health and safety laws, most companies paid little attention to the health and safety of their staff. the laws punish companies severely if an employee hurts themselves at work if the company did not do everything they could to make the workplace safe.

oh&s is a responsibility of the hr department. the hr department should have a written oh&s policy that all staff should be told about when they join the company.

if you work with computers, you should rest your eyes and hands for at least five minutes each hour. if you don't, you could damage your eyes and develop a problem called carpal tunnel syndrome in your wrists.

for people who have to lift heavy things, the company should show you how to lift properly so that you don't injure your back. pay close attention to oh&s policies to protect yourself from serious injury at work.

oh&s also involves having a comfortable chair and proper desk to work at as well as having a good keyboard if you do a lot of typing.

remember, work is important, but your health is even more important!

beth: sally, will you check these new oh&s posters for me before i put them up?

sally: of course i will. you know that i love teamwork!

beth: i think that oh&s is so important that i have made some posters for the office walls to remind people to take a break every hour.

sally: that's a great idea beth. i wish that i had thought of it!

beth: i got the idea because i often get a headache from staring at my computer for too long.

sally: and you think that taking a short break every hour can help?

beth: i know it can. if i get up and have a short break every hour, i feel better and am more efficient.

sally: well you have taught me something new today. i will try to put your ideas into practice.

beth: we can take our breaks together and practice english while we relax.

sally: that's the best idea i have heard today!

1.be itching for a chance to do 很想找個機會試一試

形容詞itching的意思是“渴望的”,be itching to do意為“渴望做某事”;for a chance指“找機會”,因此整個習(xí)語的意思即為“渴望得到機會試做某事”。

A: I am itching for a chance to cooperate with Mike. I hear he’s a very competent person.

B: Everyone who has worked with him will have a deep impression on that point.

2.be of one mind

A: What do the board think about this plan?

B: They are of one mind in passing it.

A: Good news.

3.be in full swing

Thebuilding project is in full swing.(這個建筑工程正處在全力進行之中。)

A: I hear your company in expanding itsbusiness.

B: Yeah. We’re setting up a new factory nowand the work on it is in full swing. The project will becompleted in three months.

4.be in high gear

A: By the way, how is your business going? Is it proceeding smoothly?

B: Yes, it’s in high gear.

5.be of two minds

be of two minds和be in two minds的意思基本相同,均表示“左右搖擺”或“拿不定主意,下不了決心”。例如:Don’t depend on him to decide. He always seems to be of two minds on importantmatters.(別指望他能做出決定。

A: Are you ready to take the plunge and pound the pavements for new one?

B: I’m still of two minds. But I do seem to like to quit my present job.

A: What kind of job are you aiming at? I mean, do you have a particular job in mind?

B: I have a good mind to go into business. I think I can be equally successful as most otherwomen in business.

我們要加班we have to work overtime

在工作節(jié)奏飛快的今天,加班已經(jīng)不再是人們在傳統(tǒng)意義上所認為的“無能的表現(xiàn)”,但i'm afraid that we have to work overtime.的確不是什么好消息,而i've been working overtime lately.

a:i'm afraid that we have to work overtime this week.

b:i've had it. i've been working overtime lately. do you iknow how many hours i work each day now?

a:loosen up! it's not worth 2ettin2 udset about. we have no choice but to make our plan complete at the end of this month.

b:goodness! that's tough indeed! 14 to 16 hours each day.

a:i surely you'ii be paid extra for 6 t0 8 hours overtime every day.

b:i don't care. i do not need money. i'd like to enjoy life more than work.

a:don't be so scnsitive. i've seen worse.

b:i know, i'm just whining. when we work overtime we're paid time and a half after all.

sometimes l work vcry long hours.

that work has really knocked me off.

1. Hey, don't try to rip me off. I know what this is worth.

如:“ The shop tried to rip me off, but I taught them a good lesson.

如果真的被狠宰了一下,你當(dāng)然還可以說,“ I was ripped off .”或者“ I was cleaned out”。

2. Can you give me a little deal on this?

Can you give me this for cheaper?

3. Is there any discount on bulk purchases?

Give me a discount.

“Bulk purchases”就是“大量地購買”,等于“buy something in bulk”。
