6、hips,participationinpersonalandsmallgrouptraining,andratesofolderadultsutilizinghealthclubsindicatethatthemarketcontinuestorebound(1).Further,the demand for qualified exercise professionals such as credentialed personaltrainers,clinical exercise physiologists,and athletic trainers is anticipated to
7、grow 10%to 14%by 2032(2).Therefore,it is important that industry stakeholders(i.e.,owners/operators,practi-tioners,and researchers)have reliable evidence on which to base business decisions and profes-sional development opportunities.ACSMs Worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends has been ahighlyanticipat
8、edlistpredictingthemostimportanttrends,withthepotentialtoguidethefutureof the fitness industry,since 2006(3).The annual survey results offer health and fitness profes-sionals the knowledge of emerging trends and innovative modalities to better serve consumers.The survey introduces a systematic way t
9、o predict future health and fitness trends bycollecting data from professionals across key facets of the broader industry.For example,the2021surveypredictedonlinetraining(no.1)andwearabletechnology(no.2)inresponseVolume 28|Number 6www.acsm-healthfitness.org11Copyright 2024 American College of Sports

11、ise gyms(no.2)rose to the top of the list asconsumers embraced an alternative to health clubs(5).Home ex-ercisegymsfelltotheno.13trendin2023asconsumersreturnedto in-person programming.In 2023,while the no.1 trend re-mained wearable technology,other top trends reflected a shiftaway from virtual progr
12、amming and a return to the basics of ex-ercise modalities for health such as strength training with freeweights(no.2),body weight training(no.3),fitness programsfor older adults(no.4),and functional fitness training(no.5)(6).Trends are added and removed each year to reflect both thedynamic nature of
13、 the fitness industry and the availability of liter-aturetosupporttheirapplicability.Trendscanappearforseveralyears(e.g.,wearable technology)or drop off the list after only1 year.New to this years survey are influencer/ambassador-ledfitness programs(no.12),hot and cold therapies(no.20),and ex-ercise
14、incancertreatment(no.29).Thehealthandfitnessindustryshould utilize the trends survey to support business decisions,in-vestments,product innovation,and professional development.Thisannualarticleevaluatesthepredictedtrendsandrespondentdemographics to help readers determine how they may impacttheir uni
15、que business model.TRENDS SURVEYFor the 2025 survey,there were 45 possible trends across sevencategories(Figure 1).Trend categories were previously incorpo-rated to enhance the contextual understanding for participantsand increase survey validity(7).As in previous surveys of trends,respondents were
16、provided the dictionary definition and askedto distinguish betweena“trend”and a“fad”inthe fitness indus-try(seeSidebar1).Additionally,abriefdescriptionofeachtrendwasprovidedtoimproveinterpretation.Theonlinesurveywasdis-seminated via the QualtricsXMplatform from April 2 to June 2,2024.Participant inc

29、/2024Health/Lippincott Williams and Wilkins and a$100 Mastercardgift card.Trend items were measured using a 10-point Likert-type scaleranging from 1(not a trend)to 10(definitely a trend).Qualitativedata were collected via open-ended comment boxes made avail-able to participants.An individual unique
30、link was emailed toACSM certified professionals,ACSM alliance members,ACSMprofessional members,ACSMs Health&Fitness Journal(HFJ)as-sociateeditors,andHFJeditorialboardmembers(N=30,394).Atotalof 1,745 participants completed the survey resulting in a 7%response rate.Social media platforms,including the
31、 HFJsFacebook page and the ACSM Instagram,obtained 471 re-sponses.A generic link was made available to all registered at-tendees of the 2024 ACSM Annual Meeting in Boston,MA,which solicited 861 responses.After duplicates and incompletedata lines were removed,a final sample size of 2,083 was used tod
32、etermine the 2025 ACSM Top 20 Trends.Participant demographics are shown in Table 1.Survey par-ticipants were 60%women with a mean age of 41.6years(range,18to72years).ThemajorityheldatleastonecurrentACSMcer-tification(8).Nearly 55%report at least 10 years of professionalindustry experience,a signific
33、ant increase from the previous year(7).Respondents represent a variety of professions,including full-timepersonaltrainer(11%),exercisephysiologist(12.5%),andre-search faculty(11.3%)(Table 2).ACSM TRENDS SURVEY RESULTSWith wearable technology(no.1),mobile exercise apps(no.2),and data-driven training

36、se of smartphone devices may be useful forexercise professionals as they aim to increase daily physical activ-itybehaviors(9).Additionally,theincreasedrelianceontelehealthsystems gives further significance to the integration of technologyin health care for prescribing,monitoring,and measuring health
37、and fitness behaviors(10).Interestingly,worksite health promo-tion(no.2 trend in 2024)does not appear in the top 20 for thisyear.Amid the changing landscape of hybrid and remote workschedules,employersarechallengedtoleveragealternativesolu-tions for supporting the wellness of workers.This could mean
38、utilizing digital technologies to promote health and wellnessprogramming for employees.Table 3 displays the top 20 fitnesstrends for 2025 described in this report.For the past 19 years,the ACSM trends survey has been used to provide an evidencebase to guide decision making for health and fitness pro
39、fes-sionals(see Supplemental Table 1 for a cumulative list of trendshttp:/ a comparison of the top10 trends since 2007).The priorities for certain trends representunique business niches,and thus the trends survey highlightssome of the notable differences in the ranking of top trendsbetween professio
40、ns(see Figure 2)and years of experience(seeFigure 3)where applicable.Data-driven training technology increases thesafety of exercise for special populations suchas those with cardiometabolic disease andcertain types of cancer.1.Wearable technology.Wearable technology con-tinues as the no.1 trend in
41、the 2025 survey,nearly con-sistent with previous survey results since 2016(no.3 for2018andno.2for2021).Thefieldofwearabletechnol-ogy is constantly advancing and allows real-time self-monitoring and feedback from devices such as fitnesstrackers,smartwatches,heart rate monitors,and GPStrackingdevices.
42、Thesedevicescanprovideinformationsuch as physical activity(i.e.,steps,active minutes),healthmarkers(i.e.,heartrate,ECG,glucose),sedentarybehaviors,sleep,and even stress(i.e.,heart rate variabil-ity).Wearable activity trackers can support healthy life-stylebehaviorchangethroughgoalsetting,personalize

45、o their clients,while acknowledging their potential limitations withincertain settings(e.g.,health care)and among special pop-ulations(e.g.,older adults)(11,12).Wearable technologywasthetop-rankedtrendamongallexerciseprofessionalsin this years survey,except for full-time personaltrainers.Respondents
46、 working as full-time personaltrainers ranked wearable technology significantlylower than exercise physiologists,strength and condi-tioning coaches,and those working in academia(e.g.,graduate students and research faculty).It is beyondthe scope of this paper to speculate what variablesmay influence
47、the use of wearable technology with per-sonal training clientele.Still,using technology couldserve as a more effective way of tracking progress andincreasing communication to improve and maintainadherence.2.Mobile exercise applications(apps).Mobile ex-ercise apps continue to move up the list(no.7 in
48、 2024and no.20 in 2023)and seem to be a more importanttrendamongexerciseprofessionalswithmoreexperience(seeFigure3).In2023,therewere850millionfitnessappdownloads by nearly 370 million users(13).The upwardtrajectoryofmobileexerciseappscouldbefueledbytheircomplimentary nature with wearable technology(
49、the no.1 trend).Mobile exercise apps can allow flexible,adapt-able,accessible,and customizable fitness programming.Novice exercisers can benefit from the use of a qualitymobile exercise app especially when used in conjunc-tion with,or as an extension of,a qualified exerciseprofessional.Like wearable
50、 technology,some cautioniswarranted whenusingfreemobile appsrelatedtofit-ness and exercise as they may lack clear theoretical orphysiologicalfoundations(14).Therearevalidatedscor-ing tools that have been developed to help evaluatequalityandsafetywithrespecttotheACSMexercisepre-scription guidelines(1
51、5).Exercise professionals can lever-agemobileexerciseappstoprovideevidence-basedex-ercise prescription,rooted in ACSMs guidelines.3.Fitness programs for older adults.The develop-mentoffitnessprograms for older adults holds its placeas the no.3trend.Regularphysical activity forthis pop-ulation remain
52、s a critical strategy for maintaining over-all health,preventing chronic diseases,improving qual-ity of life,and promoting independent living.Adultsaged 60 years and older are also less likely to engagein the recommended amounts of physical activity forhealth(16),making them an important demographic
53、for high-quality,evidence-based programming.Sarco-penia,the age-related loss of muscle mass,function,and strength production,affects a large proportion ofolder adults increasing the risk of frailty and/or falls(17).An international collaboration of experts devel-oped the first global definition of s
54、arcopenia,which isanimportantsteptowardidentifyingandguidingglobalefforts for treatment(18).It is likely that as older adultsbegin to make up a larger proportion of the total U.S.population,thistrendofprogrammingfortheseindivid-uals will be an important area of professional develop-ment for exercise
55、 professionals.Notably,this trendtended to be ranked higher among professionals withmore experience.Those with 10+years of experiencerated it higher than those with less than 1 year of expe-rience,which may reflect that professionals with moreexperience are more likely to work with the aging pop-ula
56、tion in health clubs or clinical settings.However,allexercise professionals should be proactive in consultingresources such as the Senior Fitness Test(SFT),whichassesses key components of functional movement(19).4.Exercise for weight loss.Exercise for weight lossremains consistent as the no.4 trend.
57、Global rates ofobesityhavedoubledamongadults,withapproximatelyone in eight adults categorized as having obesity.Fur-ther,obesity rates among children and adolescents havenearly quadrupled in the past 30 years(20).While thebenefits of exercise are positive regardless of weight sta-tus,regular exercis
58、e should be included as a part of amulticomponent strategy for the long-term mainte-nanceofweightloss.Exercise,specificallystrengthtrain-ing,is the main driver of maintaining lean muscle masswhile in a caloric deficit and/or on obesity medica-tions.In addition to maximizing opportunities formovement
59、 throughout the day(i.e.,reducing sedentarybehavior),exerciseprogrammingforthosewithobesityor those who are in a caloric deficit should focus ona combination of aerobic and resistance training atmoderate to vigorous intensity(21).The rise in anti-obesity medications means that exercise professionals

62、e.It is suggested that exercise profes-sionals establish clear communication with clientele tounderstandpreviousexperienceswithexercise.Targetingenjoyability and feasibility as important exercise pro-gramming outcomes can increase self-efficacy and re-duce stigma associated with obesity(21).Interest
63、ingly,strength and conditioning coaches tended to rate thistrend higher byafull-scalepointcomparedtootherpro-fessions.Strength and conditioning coaches are often apart of a multidisciplinary sport performance team re-sponsible for ensuring that athletes meet weight andbody composition requirements e
64、specially in weightclassrestricted sports such as Olympic weightlifting,boxing,and wrestling.5.Traditional strength training.After falling to no.17inthe2024survey,traditionalstrengthtrainingmovesback up the trends list to no.5.Traditional strengthtraining,a key tenet of ACSMs exercise guidelines,in-
65、corporatesequipmentsuchasbarbells,dumbbells,andkettlebells focusing on proper movement and liftingtechnique to improve or maintain muscular fitness.The 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americansrecommend that adults complete at least 2 days perweekofstrengthtraining,acrossallmajormusclegroups(2
66、2).Despite this recommendation,many adults do notachieve sufficient strength training.Thus,exercise pro-fessionals can help clients achieve the recommendedvolume of strength training through progressive pro-gramming that manipulates repetition schemes,sets,tempo,load,and/or exercise selection.6.High
67、-intensity interval training(HIIT).Risingto no.6 on the trends list,HIIT has been a consistenttop 10 trend since 2018.Its stability is likely due toits effectiveness as a training modality across demo-graphics and among varying health statuses(e.g.,car-diometabolic disease and cancer)(23).HIIT invol
68、vesrepeated short bouts of near maximal,high-intensity(85%HRmax)aerobic efforts followed by active orpassiverestperiods(65%HRmax)thatallowsufficientrecovery to repeat the same working effort.HIIT istime efficient and requires minimal equipment makingit feasible for a range of settings.Exercise profe
69、ssionalsshould administer appropriate prescreening with cli-ents,carefully monitor intensity and form for safety,and may consider the use of digital technology(e.g.,wearable devices)to do so.7.Data-driven training technology.Data-driventraining technology was added in 2024 and appearsas the no.7 tre
70、nd for 2025.Data-driven training tech-nology can help clients understand the physiologicalresponsestoanexercisestimulusinreal-time.Thistypeof training allows individualized coaching and instruc-tion,even in a group setting where there may be vari-ous fitness levels.Exercise professionals also may le
71、ver-agebiofeedback(i.e.,sleep,andheartratevariability)ascritical components of training and recovery.Usingreal-time data to tailor daily exercise sessions,exerciseprofessionals can morereadilyadjusttrainingvariablesin response to acute conditions,which increases thesafety of exercise for special pop
72、ulations such as thosewith cardiometabolic conditions.This trend of data-driven training seems to be more popular amongstrength and conditioning coaches and athletic trainers(Figure 2).Additionally,professionals with more years ofexperience seemed to recognize data-driven training asan important tre
73、nd,which indicates a potential area ofadditional education for exercise professionals newer tothe field.8.Exercise for mental health.Exercise for mentalhealth remains the no.8 trend after being added in2024.This trend focuses on exercise programming de-signed to improve aspects of mental health,like
74、 reduc-ing feelings of anxiety,stress,and depression.Whilespecific exercise guidelines for mental health benefitshave not been established,exercise professionalsshould aim to help clients accumulate physical activitydoses that meet ACSM guidelines.Additionally,it isimportant to incorporate client pr
75、eferences for activi-ties and acknowledge individual barriers that may in-fluence participation(24).Notably,clinical profes-sionals(i.e.,physiologists and medical professionals)ranked this trend significantly lower than other profes-sionals.These differences could be influenced by theisolated treatm

134、esent aneconomical barrier for some regions.For example,technology-oriented fitness trends do not seem tohold much appeal,perhapsdue tothe prevailing financialconstraints in Iran.In light of theseobservations,there is a clear and pressing need for low-cost andbudget gyms that offer traditional stren
135、gth training facilities andprograms.It should be noted that some regions report greater shifts intrends from year to year.However,Spain and Mexico,whichhave reported region-specific trends since 2019 and 2021,re-spectively,tend to reflect relatively stable trends each year.Amore stable fitness secto
136、r in these areas may contribute to lessdramaticshiftsinthetoptrends.Italsoisplausiblethatsamplingcharacteristics(e.g.,demographics of survey respondents in theseregions)may explain this occurrence.Global trends are respon-sive to both local,national,and international changes in the fit-ness industry
137、.LIMITATIONSThe annual trends survey is a valid and reliable tool forpredicting future fitness trends according to exercise profes-sionals across the globe.However,it is not without limitations.First,the low response rate among invited respondents is note-worthy.Despite the incentive to participate
138、and multiple re-minder emails,the survey completion rate remains lower thanthe20%responserate typicalinsurvey-based research.Further,most recruitment efforts targeted ACSM certified professionals,which may limit the perspectives of those credentialed throughother organizations.After determining the
